The Director – Data Security is responsible for the strategic direction of data security across the United Airlines enterprise and reports directly to the VP / CISO. This position will plan and deliver on the data security strategy to encompass the regulatory needs of global data privacy and protection regulations as well as a strong security posture. Director will identify, develop, implement, and maintain security-related processes that reduce United’s operational risks.

What You’ll Be Responsible For:

  • Strategy, management, leadership and execution of a world class data security program across United Airlines

  • Responsible for understanding the data landscape across United both within the technology teams and within the business

  • This role will be responsible for working across the organization to implement data protection and privacy strategies that protect our customer and employee data, but at the same time do not prevent progress within the business environment

  • Responsible for the technical planning and implementations of data security technology across multiple platforms

  • Responsible for interfacing with our compliance, audit and legal teams on matters of mutual interest

  • Ownership of security metrics and incident analysis across the organization – must be able to document and communicate to appropriate audiences

  • Coordinating the execution of all IT Security tools, technologies, people, processes and procedures enterprise-wide, ensuring internal and external standards are followed

  • Must collaborate well with other IT teams across the organization

  • This role is both strategic and tactical – must have strong technical capabilities in the security arena, particularly in the areas of encryption, data loss prevention and other data management technologies as well as strong leadership skills with their team, and across other teams

  • Must be able to communicate and articulate security matters to all layers of the organization

  • Providing United’s Leadership team updates on our data security posture; educating stakeholders on importance and role of employees maintaining a secure corporate environment

Who we’re looking for:

  • Seasoned security leader with experience in building world class data security strategies and executing on them

  • Must be business savvy and understand how data drives business outcomes but must also be secure and meet the increasing demands of compliance

  • Must be able to translate complex technical problems into business language and articulate risk beyond just the framework of security

  • Someone to lead this program and work closely with our partners in legal, audit and compliance

  • Someone who is well versed in global data privacy and protection technologies, issues and regulations and can bring them together to form strategic direction and implementations

  • Outstanding communicator with leadership presence, who can build effective internal and external relationships, and interact effectively with individuals at all levels

  • Influence – ability to collaborate and get work done through others

  • Player-coach with experience leading teams of highly skilled employees

  • Candidates with relevant technology experience in a large airline or retail, or critical infrastructure environment, such as financial services, healthcare, payments, etc.

  • Strong understanding how technical controls can be applied to solve specific information security problems

  • Ability to ensure the ongoing compliance with all information security policies, standards and guidelines in the development of information security plans

  • Understanding IT and InfoSec terminology and concepts

  • College graduate (Information Technology, Computer Science degree preferred) with at least 15 years of relevant professional experience


  • A computer-science or cyber security related BS or BA degree is preferred

  • CISSP and/or relevant SANS certifications are preferred


  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Candidate must currently have or meet the requirements to obtain a US Government SECRET security clearance

  • Willing and able to travel as needed for business required - Domestic and international travel (Up to 20%)
