Job overview and responsibilities

The Director – Hub Communications position oversees a local-market focused communications team to maximize both internal and external communications opportunities in the key cities where United does business. Through close partnership with hub leadership teams, this leader ensures all local communications are consistent, maintains a vital link between the local airports and United's Chicago headquarters and influences United's local reputation through a proactive earned media strategy.

  • Proactively surface and prioritize content for media stories and storytelling, social media, and employees

  • Oversee market-based employee communications priorities

  • Strengthen and expand relationships with reporters and industry influencers in hub markets

Required:

  • Solid understanding of employee relations (including labor) and drivers of employee engagement

  • Degree in communications or related field

  • 7+ years of experience in communications

  • 3+ years leading a team of multiple direct reports

  • Strong business acumen

  • Significant media relations expertise

  • Deep understanding of airline operations

  • Excellent writing and strategic planning skills

  • Ability to effectively lead a high functioning team remotely

  • Must function as a credible advisor to senior leaders

  • Ability to engage in both production of communications materials and supervision of staff members handling projects

  • Ability to work effectively at all levels in an organization

  • Creative and innovative approach to problem solving

  • Self-starter with an appetite to improve legacy communications practices and vehicles

  • Collaborative approach with an ability to develop and lead fully integrated communications programs

  • Strong people leader to develop a high functioning team

  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure at high level and deal with complex issues, ability to prioritize/plan and execute using good business judgment in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills, proactive communicator with strong presentation skills and executive presence

  • International Travel up to 30%

  • Extraordinary attention to detail and ability to execute projects at a high caliber to completion
