Route Planning and Strategy Overview

The Route Planning and Strategy department is responsible for ownership of United’s P&L and directing our competitive strategy in the dynamic and complex airline industry. Our team determines where we fly and what aircraft to fly there – we research new destinations, improve the profitability of existing destinations, and plan the future strategy for each geography in which we compete.

We determine our aircraft fleet strategy, including evaluating aircraft purchases and retirements and optimizing seating configurations on our large and diverse fleet. We act as architects in strategically planning and building United’s route network structure, by optimizing hub connectivity, analyzing the impact of economic trends, and forecasting demand. We also manage United’s partnerships with other leading airlines around the globe. We rely on practical applications of game theory as we model the industry reaction of each change in United’s network, and work to anticipate the moves of our competitors.

Job Overview and Responsibilities

Internship opportunities will be available in the areas of Planning, Scheduling, and Strategy. Tasks will vary by group and may involve the following:

  • Providing profitability forecasts and make recommendations for frequency planning or new market adds

  • Analyzing market forces like demand patterns, yield developments and other economic conditions

  • Building financial models to evaluate various strategic opportunities

  • Analyzing our competitive environment and benchmark United against other airlines

  • Working as part of our team on day-to-day business, or independently on special projects

Placement within the department will be determined during the selection process, dependent on your experience, abilities and best fit.


  • Candidate for Master of Business Administration (MBA) graduating in Spring 2023

  • At least 3 years of work experience in an analytical role demonstrating increasing responsibility

  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to handle simultaneous projects and adapt to a fast-paced, changing environment

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
