Job overview and responsibilities

This role will be responsible for all activities related to the design, development, implementation and 24x7 production support of United's complex, highly available Data Engineering and Analytics applications and across United’s Data Hub team to deliver high quality solutions to the enterprise on an accelerated time frame. Responsibilities include defining standards and best practices for Data Engineering applications and programming of data access layer and implementing support procedures and best practices for Teradata, Redshift based applications and programming of data access layer. This role will align with Platform and Architecture teams to deliver best-in-class Data Engineering and Analytics applications to achieve business goals. Database technologies include but are not limited to TeraData, RedShift, RDS, Palantir Foundry technologies that interface with the United Data Hub and related applications. Responsibilities also include coordinating with the portfolio and functional teams, including offshore teams, to prioritize work based on impact and enterprise value. This person must be effective working with Data Analytics and other business and DT leaders to ensure execution against a well-defined road map and delivery of tangible enterprise value. This person will ensure effective executive level reporting of key metrics, clarify strategy and priorities and broadly communicate successes. Success in this role will include addressing skill and bandwidth gaps, playing a key role in defining training plans for the team as well as sourcing 3rd party resources as needed. Additionally, this person will be evaluating new technology and capability that will enable the team to deliver high quality solutions to the enterprise on an accelerated time frame

  • Manage a Database Engineering and Support team including performance management, resource and workload planning, team building, project planning, and budget management

  • Lead a team of data engineers and database developers responsible for data access programming, logical database design and 24x7 support of Analytics and Reporting platforms and applications. Technologies involved include but not limited to Teradata, Redshift, Foundry, RDS,UDH, Spotfire, OBIEE, BRIO, SAS, SQL based applications

  • Coordinate communications, leadership presentations, clarifying strategy and priorities

  • Performance tuning - implement KPI metrics for performance improvements; investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve production data centric incidents

  • Acts as a data subject matter expert to guide and support various enterprise teams on data centric solutions including but not limited to security, performance, reliability, maintainability and well-formed architecture

  • Assess and leverage legacy data processes aimed at transforming into modern Data Lake service

  • Collaborate in evolving overall data lake standards and technology strategies, establish best-practice database design and support standards

  • Portfolio management, coordination with Data Engineering and other DT teams to align on priorities and tracking progress against goals

  • Maintains knowledge of market trends and developments in analytics software and related emerging technologies for development and support to recommend and deliver best in class solutions

  • Address skill and bandwidth gaps - working with DA leaders to define training plans, coordinate sourcing and delivery with 3rd party resources

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field

  • Minimum 10 years IT experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of Linux proficiency

  • Five plus years of hands on experience supporting developing Data Analytics applications

  • Willing to travel as needed for business (Up to 20%)

  • Availability to support a twenty-four by seven applications as needed for business-critical incidents

  • Five plus years in data analytics discipline supporting, designing, developing and administering high transactional volume analytics applications

  • Thorough knowledge of data engineering technologies such as TeraData, Redshift, RDS, and Palantir Foundry

  • Demonstrated ability of leading and supporting data analytics teams and applications

  • Solid knowledge and experience of architecture and tuning of data analytics systems and applications

  • Strong background in data modeling, object-oriented programming and/or functional programming

  • Experience working with stream and processing of very large datasets

  • Must possess demonstrated understanding of performance management, business consulting, project management, and applicable technology

  • Working knowledge of data engineering and analytics, tools and techniques

  • Clear understanding of how Data Engineering contributes to the success of the enterprise

  • Developing and using collaborative relationships to facilitate the accomplishment or work goals

  • Focusing and guiding others in accomplishing work objectives

  • Ability to work in a matrixed organization

  • Strong presentation skills and development of leadership & board of directors’ PowerPoint presentations

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Experience with SQL, MS Excel/PPT, Tableau, Spotfire, BRIO, OBIEE or other visualization tools

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


  • Recent experience with TeraData, Redshift, RDS or Snowflake highly desirable

  • TeraData and or Redshift Certifications and training a plus

  • AWS and/or Azure Solution Architect or Big Data certifications a plus

  • Ability to express complex technology and analytical concepts in simple business terms

  • Experience implementing technology transformation and modernization of analytics platforms to the Cloud

  • Two plus years of handson exprerince with Cloud based dataware house or Big Data solutions
