Job overview and responsibilities

This role will be responsible for all activities related to the design, development, implementation, and 24x7 production support of United's complex, highly-available NoSQL and BigData platforms. Responsibilities include defining database standards and best practices for NoSQL and Hadoop implementations and programming of data access layer. Responsibilities include defining database standards and best practices for Hadoop, ELK stack, Kafka implementations and programming of data access layer. This role will align with database Architecture and Engineering portfolios to deliver best-in-class Big Data systems to achieve business goals. Database technologies include Hadoop, ELK stack, Kafka, Couchbase, MongoDB, MS SQL Server.

  • Lead a team of engineers responsible for data access programming, physical database design, implementation, and support of Couchbase, MongoDB, Hadoop, ElasticSearch, Kafka messaging

  • Lead a team of database administrators and database developers responsible for the 24x7 support of NoSql and BigData databases including maintaining database service levels and availability goals; database monitoring and performance tuning; database backup and recovery; and resolving production database incidents

  • Manage a Database Architecture and Engineering technology team including performance management, resource and workload planning, project planning, and budget management

  • Collaborate in evolving overall database standards and technology strategies, establish best-practice database design and administration standards

  • Performance tuning - implement KPI metrics for performance improvements; investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve production database incidents

  • Researches and evaluates technical solutions including various Hadoop distributions, NoSQL databases, data integration and analytical tools with a focus on enterprise deployment capabilities like security, scalability, reliability, maintainability

  • Assess and leverage legacy data connections/improvements to incorporate into modern Data Lake service

  • Maintains knowledge of market trends and developments in Hadoop related tools, analytics software, and related and emerging technologies like cloud hosting services, Agile/DevOps development processes to recommend and deliver best practice solution


  • BS Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline or 7 years of equivalent work experience

  • 5+ years in database discipline supporting, designing, developing and administering high transactional volume database systemsWorking knowledge of Couchbase, MongoDB, MySQL, Spark, Hadoop services, Kafka, Zookeeper, Palantir and cloud foundry

  • Thorough knowledge of database technologies ranging from RDBMS databases to NoSQL databases

  • In-depth understanding of NoSQL High Availability strategies including replica sets, sharding, failover, redundant systems

  • Solid knowledge of NoSQL database concepts including architecture and tuning

  • Experience implementing Big Data solutions based on Hadoop tools like Hive, HDFS and MapReduce in a live production environment

  • Strong background in data modeling, object-oriented programming and/or functional programming

  • Experience in evaluating, selecting and implementing cloud database and storage technologies

  • Experience working with stream processing

  • Experience working with large (1TB+) datasets

Programming experience with one or more of:

  • Python, PHP, Perl, Java, Ruby

  • 2+ years serving in a management/lead role leading and mentoring software engineers (modified TL to management)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Couchbase certification, Mongo Certification or Hortonworks Hadoop Certification a plus

  • AWS and/or Azure solution architect certifications a plus.

  • Minimum 10 years IT experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of Linux proficiency

  • 4+ years of hands on experience installing, configuring, and administering NoSQL databases required, recent experience with Couchbase or MongoDB highly desirable

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
